First Harvest!

As tiring as it was, today was a very exciting day for us. We had our first harvest. The lettuces survived the bunnies, the heat and the weeds and were the first of the vegetables in our garden to be harvested. We harvested 15 heads of large leafy green lettuces this morning and successfully sold all of them at the farmer's market in the afternoon. Much credit to Lobsang's saleswoman skills!

Careful there!

Tada!

I wasn't kidding when I said they are large and leafy.

Looks like snails are fond of lettuces too

Other than our first harvest, the past week has been mostly about weeding the garden. The weeds were growing at an increasing rate until Lobsang and I began weeding starting last Thursday (Allison was on a four day leave). Unfortunately, we hadn't discovered the weeding tools in the shed until we had finished two plots, but better late than never. We finished weeding yesterday and the garden looks as good as it did earlier, in fact better with the relatively tall plants that seem to be doing great for the past couple of weeks. As suggested by our gardening guru, Russ, we have decided to mulch all of the garden to avoid more weeds. So we bought a few bales of hay today and will be mulching tomorrow.

Our personal plots are doing well too, although a number of our plants failed to germinate in the garden. Lobsang's nasturtium seeds couldn't tolerate the heat, neither could my mei qing choi. So we both have to germinate them in the greenhouse this week. Talking about germinating, the mache was a failure so we have decided to plant summer squash. We realize its slightly late but we're keeping our fingers crossed.

Loving the organic living,
Shristi
