Barstow's and Bunnies

Hello gardening community,

A few things. One, we were very pleased to recieve our very first comment from Earthie the earthworm on our previous post. Keep em' coming, Earthie! Two, bunnies are being as ferocious as ever, and om-nomm-ing the babies to pathetic states. Three, we had our second farm visit today!

Team Garden vs. Team Bunnies

Score: Team Bunnies are in the lead, 2 to 1. We got a point for patching the fence and fixing the gate, but they tied and subsequently one-upped us when they gnawed through our patching and nibbled on the lettuce and cabbage.

Barstow's Farm visit this morning

After hoeing today, we headed out to meet Dave Barstow and get a tour of the dairy. Dave is a very nice man, and very impressively helps to run the HUGE operation which is Barstow's. They milk their cows twice daily, with only have six sets of hands helping out full-time on the farm (four during the day, and two at night)! Dave showed us all around the farm--the cows, milking stations, corn fields, etc. Very cool! Right outside the milking room, we found this little plaque, which we thought deserved a photo. Cows are people, too! (I'm referenceing something, but can't remember what)

Barstow's has existed since 1806, operating mainly as a dairy since the beginning of the 1900's. They have over 200 cows, and produce over 10,000 pounds of milk PER DAY, along with many many pounds of compost, of both the liquid and dry varieties. In fact, 5 yards of their compost is now happily supplying our babies up in the garden with a healthy dose of nitrogen.

Barstow's supplies to Cabot, so next time you're having that Vermont cheddar cheese or butter, think about where it may have come from! Right here, that's where!

Until next time,

Peace, love, and veggies,

Annie and Brittany,

Student Garden Interns

I know what you could be referencing: the Kids Are People Too! School in Kenmore Square in Boston.

Brittany: I miss you!
Annie: I'd like to meet you.

Hi,

There's a myth that marigolds will help deter rabbits. It seems controversial, though. But I found a very interesting conversation regarding the idea on gardenweb, which is a resource my mom always turns to:

You might want to ask your supervisor(s) about the idea.

Good luck!
